Several student members of the Shippensburg chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) are working with the Environmental Club and the Environmental Steering Committee to host a dumpster dive on campus this week.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the CUB Amphitheater. It is open to the public, and participation is free.

Last semester, the university adopted single-stream recycling — a policy that allows multiple items to be recycled and is unsorted in any recycling bin on campus. At the dumpster dive, students will learn about the new items they can recycle, including Starbucks cups and business paper. They will then be timed as they rummage through small carts filled with paper scraps to find a set number of recyclable items.

All participants’ names and times will be recorded. The students with the 10 fastest times at the end of the event will receive environmentally friendly prizes, including T-shirts and other handmade crafts made from recyclables.

In the case of rain, the carts will be relocated inside the CUB.
Students can learn about all the things they can recycle in a fun way and win some sustainable prizes.
