Season finale delivers new personal bests for men’s indoor track

Freshman Pat Manna pole vaulted to a new personal record on Saturday as the Shippensburg University men’s indoor track team concluded its regular season at Kutztown’s Six-Team Challenge. Manna cleared 14 feet, 11 inches on his third attempt, beating his previous best of 14 feet, 1 ¼ inches that he set at Bucknell. Juniors Tyler Kersetter and Garrett Vandebrake also achieved season personal records of 47 feet, 11 ¼ inches for Kersetter and 48 feet, 3 ¼ inches for Vandebrake. Several Raiders placed first in their events in the weekend action.

Men’s basketball can’t hold on, drop pivotal division matchup

The Shippensburg University men’s basketball team held an 8-point lead on Saturday entering halftime, but it wasn’t enough as PSAC East Rival Lock Haven outscored them by 19 points in the second half to defeat the Raiders 74-63. Shippensburg (12-13, 8-13 PSAC) entered the second half with a 31-23 lead, but turnovers, the inability to land shots and faulty defense resulted in Lock Haven commencing the second period with a 37-13 run in the first 12:30 minutes of play.

Boxing gains experience at West Point Spring Invitational

A week after winning an impressive five out of seven fights at home the Shippensburg University boxing team traveled to West Point Military Academy to take on Army this past Saturday. The Raider’s lineup featured some of the less-experienced fighters from SU, and the team went 0-4 at the match, although they gained some valuable experience.

Will basketball find success in 2015 playoffs?

The excitement of the 2015 Division II college basketball playoffs is upon us. This year, both the men and women’s teams have a shot at grabbing a playoff spot with four games left to play in the regular season. The women’s team sits at 16-9 on the season, and holds third place in the PSAC East with a 12-7 record.

Indoor track breaks records at Boston Invitational

The SU Men’s Indoor Track team was invited to compete in Boston University’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational Saturday, and the team took full advantage of the opportunity, adding a school record and a number of standout performances on the big stage. The 4x400-meter relay was the Red Raiders’ top mark of the day, with the quartet of seniors Eric Bologa, Andrew Kujawski, Robert Bales and sophomore Tim Usher running 3:12:52 for the school record. That time is 2.4 seconds faster than the record that was set just last season, but only resulted in a third place finish in the race. Individual performances were key to the Red Raiders’ big day as well.

Boxing outclasses the competition at annual match

A looping left hook from Haziz Self landed flush to his opponent’s jaw, buckling his knees as the referee stepped in to signal that the fight was over. The third-round TKO brought the roaring crowd to its feet, highlighting a wildly successful annual event held by the Shippensburg University boxing team this past Saturday from Henderson Gymnasium. “Overall I am very happy about the event,” Shippensburg coach Travis Wylie said.

Indoor track breaks records at Bucknell Tune-Up

The Shippensburg University indoor track team dominated in several events, including the 800 meters, long jump and shot put at the Bucknell Tune-Up on Friday night. Sophomore Sarah Hunt demolished one of the Raiders’ most storied field records at the event by almost four inches, recording a long jump of 19 feet, 6 ¾ inches that is good for a 9-inch personal best. In shot put senior Liz Ross beat her personal record at shot put by more than a foot with a throw of 46 feet, 2 inches.

Women’s basketball moves closer to playoff berth

The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team defeated the Mansfield Mounties this past Wednesday 64-49, thanks in large part to a balance attack by the starters who were all able to score in double figures Wednesday night. The victory ensured that the Raiders will finish the season at or above .500 in the conference since the PSAC began counting the league games in 2011. The Red Raiders (15-9 and 11-7 PSAC East) were lead in scoring by Senior guard Logan Snyder and Senior forward Morgan Griffith who each had a team high 14 points.

Shippensburg rebounds to beat West Liberty 21-19 after falling to 15-1 Mercyhurst

The Shippensburg University wrestling team battled to 2-1 from Heiges Field House on Saturday afternoon, falling to Mercyhurst 30-12 before thwarting West Liberty’s efforts in a 21-19 victory and destroying American International University 35-9. The Raiders (5-11, 1-4 PSAC) celebrated Alumni Day before the tri meet, which featured the Mercyhurst (15-1, 5-0 PSAC) and West Liberty (1-6 dual-meet record) matchups at 2 pm.

45-point first half boosts women’s basketball over East Stroudsburg

Five different Raiders scored in double figures, running up the score in the first half as the Shippensburg University women’s basketball team made short work of East Stroudsburg in an 80-60 victory on Wednesday at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Raiders used a 42-15 run in the first half, and led by as many as 22 points in the second half to take home the win. The squad out-rebounded the Warriors 45-33, and the Raiders (14-8, 10-6 PSAC East) currently lead the PSAC with 43.2 boards per contest. Freshman Vicky Tumasz had an incredible night from beyond the arc, sinking 5-of-5 from 3-point range to finish with 15 points.

Raider sports make improvements on signing day

Several Shippensburg University sports have announced their initial recruits for the 2015 signing day. The football program picked up 19 new players, who have all signed national letters of intent or institutional letters to play at SU this fall under coach Mark Maciejewski. “We’re fired up about this recruiting class,” Maciejewski said.
