Softball shows off with back-to-back no-hitters, perfect game highlights historic week

Shippensburg University’s softball team gave the school a week to remember, putting together back-to-back historic pitching performances with explosive offense on the side to finish 5–1 across a six-game week.

At the center of it all was a historic moment for the softball program, defining the meaning of heart and determination, which is what defines the Raiders.

Sophomore Dani Hayward pitched in Game 1 against Mansfield, throwing a perfect game in a 6–0 victory. Hayward was invincible across seven innings, retiring all 21 batters she faced while striking out six.

From the first pitch, she established her dominance, mostly staying ahead in the counts and limiting any legitimate contact. As the game went on, it was clear that the weight of the moment got bigger as each out was recorded, but Hayward remained calm, finishing off one of the most dominant outings in program history.

Hayward talked about the nerves she experienced as she achieved perfection

“It felt really great to accomplish something like that, especially with my team behind me the whole way,” said Hayward. “I’m not sure exactly when I realized it was possible, but the seventh inning was definitely nerve-wracking knowing what was at stake and putting that pressure on myself to get those final three outs.”

Every pitcher is only as good as the teammates around her though, as the defense played a huge role, staying focused and keeping it clean to secure perfection. Every play carried added pressure due to the meaning, but the Raiders handled each opportunity beautifully, completing one of, if not the rarest feat in softball.

What made the performance even more historic was what followed in Game 2.

In Game 2, senior Kaira Zamadics delivered a no-hitter of her own in an 8–0 win. Although a walk and two hit batters prevented a second perfect game, the performance still carried a historic purpose, marking the first time in the program's history that the Raiders recorded back-to-back no-hitters.

Zamadics ambushed hitters early, mixing her repertoire to perfection, and she kept Mansfield batters at bay throughout, solidifying the power and capabilities of the Raiders’ pitching staff.

“Our group is amazing. We are like a little family, especially the two freshmen, Mya and Mikayla,” said Zamadics. “They are just amazing. I love them. They are so positive and little rays of sunshine. I just think that we've been a really positive group with each other. We're always picking each other up. It's never a bad moment between all of us and I think we've just created a really healthy atmosphere.”

SU carried that momentum into a midweek doubleheader against Frostburg State, where the offense showed what it was capable of in Game 1.

Shippensburg exploded for  17 hits in a 15–6 victory. Senior Lindsey Haser led the way with six RBIs and a home run, while senior Caitlyn Martell provided three hits, four runs and a home run in her own right.

Freshman Leah Schwalm also joined the party with three hits and two RBIs, showcasing an all-around offensive effort.

Game 2, however, was a speed bump for the Raiders, as Shippensburg fell 5–4 despite an inspiring performance from Schwalm, who provided each of the four runs  with a home run to cap off her day.

Frostburg took advantage late in the game to hand the Raiders their only loss of the week. Despite the loss, junior Madalyn Dyer provided a strong outing out of the pen with two scoreless innings to keep the game within reach for the Raiders.

Shippensburg responded strongly in their doubleheader this past Saturday against West Chester, with one of its most complete performances of not only the week but maybe the season.

In Game 1, the Raiders cruised by in a 14–0 mercy rule victory, putting up 12 runs in the second inning alone. Junior Brie Wilmot led the offense with three RBIs, while Martell and Schwalm each added two of their own. Hayward returned to the mound and once again showed out, allowing just three hits over five shutout innings.

Game 2 against West Chester had a completely different complexion, turning into a back-and-forth battle.

After an early deficit, the Raiders found a late spark. Wilmot came up clutch with a game-tying RBI in the seventh inning, and followed with a walk off home run in the ninth to capture the 2–1 victory. Hayward earned the win with five innings of scoreless relief under her belt, while Zamadics kept the game close early.

Shippensburg will look to carry that historic week into its next matchup, returning home to face Shepherd in a doubleheader scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. They will then play at Mansfield at 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday before a home doubleheader against Millersville at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
