SGA Corner: Full Steam Ahead

It is hard to believe that the first eight weeks of the semester are behind us. The Student Government Association (SGA) has been putting in the work representing the campus community and will continue to do so throughout the semester.

Student Government had a successful fall election and is excited to be working with the five new members. Congratulations to Abigail Reasoner, Chase Garrison, Matt Jones, Daniel McCleary and Josephine Hughes. It is always great to be working with new people in SGA, and they will do an excellent job representing their various constituencies.

The most recent public meeting was a success and highlighted some of the work that SGA is doing for our campus. Four student groups, Ski/Snowboard Club, Pickleball Club, Golf Club and Not So Hidden Figures were all approved as new student groups on campus. The Student Group Committee has done a wonderful job reviewing new constitutions, recommending changes and getting these groups approved by SGA.

The Budget & Finance Committee has also been operating at full steam this semester and SGA approved three members who have recently joined the committee. SGA is thrilled to have so many students representing various parts of the campus on the Budget and Finance Committee.

In addition to all the voting items that SGA completed at this public meeting, our new provost, Darrell Newton addressed us as SGA and the student body. He plans on continuing his work and communication with SGA, staff, faculty and students across campus. He looks forward to coming back to speak further with SGA about his role as provost.

As the semester keeps moving by quickly, SGA is always ready to add more representation to any of its committees. Committees are a great way for students to advocate for issues that are important to them. And remember, you do not need to be a member of SGA to serve on any of the committees. The committees that are currently meeting include Budget & Finance, Campus Safety & Facilities, Diversity & Inclusion, Food Service & Sustainability and the Student Groups committees.

If you have interest in any of those committees, please reach out to any of the Vice President of Internal Affairs, Katie Huston, at sgavpinternal@ship.edu.
