Shippensburg University´s swim team featured the student-athlete group "The Hidden Opponent" during their home meet on Friday, Oct. 20. The group is represented by the green ribbon stickers on the athlete´s back.

Shippensburg University’s men’s and women’s swim teams won this past Friday, with the men ending their meet against Fairmont 101-91 and the women winning against Fairmont 130-68 and California (Pa.) 115-79. 

Shippensburg women’s team took first in one relay and six solo events, and men won two relays and six solo events.

The 1000-yard freestyle event provided an opportunity for Shippensburg swimmers to take a lead and set themselves apart from the competition. Shippensburg junior David Johnson won the men’s event. He ended it with a time of 10:24.17, which was a minute ahead of second place. 

Shippensburg junior Allie Keeling had a similarly impressive showing on the women’s 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 11:14.07, which put her in first place. Keeling also took first in the women’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.62. 

In the 200-yard women’s medley, senior Marissa Bittner, first-year Jazz Barry, sophomore Makennah Fickett and junior Lauren Croll brought home a first-place win with a time of 1:51. 78. Barry also added to Shippensburg’s win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.41. 

First-year Michelle Kubiak took first in the 100-yard freestyle, and with a time of 56.17 she qualified for PSAC. Croll took second in the 50-yard freestyle, but she also achieved a qualifying time for PSAC.

Alyssa Tomb swam in the 200-yard individual medley capturing first with a time of 2:15.77.

The men’s relay wins came from sophomore Kevin Noldy, junior Nathan VanNatter and first-years Mason Koeth and Robbie Ferlick in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.53. In the Freestyle relay, Ferlick, Johnson, first-year Cooper Mercer and junior Zaidian Van Orden won with a time of 1:28.91.

In the 50-yard freestyle, senior Matthew Beard, VanNatter and Van Orden all got PSAC qualifying times, even though Shippensburg did not claim first place.

Koeth continued to have a great meet with wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly with qualifying times of 1:59.74 and 51.77. Van Orden also achieved another qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle, and his time of 49.20 saw him earn first place.

Senior Michael Salvatori took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.01. VanNatter also got another first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.79. 

Shippensburg will swim again at Clarion on Friday, Nov. 3.
