Another Shippensburg University graduate’s life has been taken.

Steven A. Esworthy, 31, of Harrisburg, was hit over the head with an object while walking home from a wedding early Sunday morning.

Esworthy, SU Class of 2007, spent Saturday celebrating and was walking home alone around 1:30 a.m. Sunday along the 1200 block of Green Street, PennLive reported from police.

The assailant, who is missing, struck Esworthy on the head and neck, rifled through his pockets and fled the scene, according to PennLive and ABC27 News.

An anonymous neighbor reported seeing Esworthy stumble at the intersection of Green and Charles streets and then walking in the direction of Verbeke Street, ABC27 said. The neighbor noticed a man walking behind the victim with what appeared to be a piece of wood in hand. While walking his dog, the neighbor saw Esworthy bleeding on the ground and a man checking the victim’s pockets.

Paramedics pronounced Esworthy dead at the scene, ABC27 reported.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 20s, wearing jeans and what appeared to be a white tank top draped around his neck, ABC27 and PennLive reported from police.

Shippensburg University made a post on its Facebook page Monday morning expressing its condolences to the family and friends of Esworthy, as well as Amanda Strous, another SU alumnus, who was killed in North Carolina on June 18.

Anyone with information regarding the Harrisburg crime is encouraged to call police at 717-558-6900. Up to $2,000 will be rewarded by Dauphin County Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest.
