The Shippensburg University women’s softball team spent its spring break traveling to Florida and Virginia to compete in two tournaments. SU began its long week of competition in Clermont, Florida, to compete in the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games.

The Lady Raiders struggled during their first day of play on Saturday, March 5. They fell to Cedarville University 0-1, Saint Joseph’s University 5-10 and Ferris State University 6-11. SU returned to the field the following day to play another set of three games. Unfortunately, SU did not get off to a good start with a 2-5 loss against the University of Charleston, followed by another loss against Stonehill College (1-4). The Lady Raiders managed to end their second day of competition with a 7-1 win against Ferris State, who they had battled against the previous day.

SU came back after a two-day break to face off against three more teams on Wednesday, March 9. The Lady Raiders took on Winona State University first, but lost to the Warriors 0-8. SU was almost able to pull out a win against Saginaw Valley State University in the second game of the day, but ended up falling 6-7. SU ended its day with a final loss to St. Cloud State University with a final score of 0-4.

SU wrapped up the NTC Spring Games on Thursday, March 10 with an 8-5 win over Concordia University.

The Lady Raiders’ next stop was Salem, Virginia, where they would compete in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament. SU started off strong on Friday, March 11 with a 6-1 over Bowie State University. Seniors Taylor Patillo and Briana Giovenco each slammed a home run while Taryn Wilson got the win for SU on the rubber.

SU resumed play on Saturday, March 12, facing off against Wheeling Jesuit University and West Virginia State University. SU took on Wheeling first, defeating the Cardinals 3-1. Sophomore pitcher Chloe Collins got the win for SU (2-5). SU was unable to keep up in the game against West Virginia State and fell 3-9.

SU wrapped up its stay in Salem on Sunday, March 13 with two wins over the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, and Davis & Elkins College.

SU pulled out an 11-7 win over Virginia-Wise with the help of five home runs hit by sophomores Anna Warfield and Eryn Caragein and Pattillo. Collins pitched and won the game for the Lady Raiders.

SU finished off its spring break schedule with a 4-0 victory over Davis & Elkins. Luck hit a home run for the Lady Raiders, as did Pattillo, making it her second home run of the day. Wilson pitched and earned her fifth win of the season over the Senators.

SU will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania in its home opener on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
