Women's soccer begins season with tie, win in season’s opening games

Lady Red Raiders’ soccer was officially underway when the athletes laced up their cleats and traveled to California (PA) to face the Vulcans in its season opener. SU tied with California but proceeded to record its first win against East Stroudsburg in a home matchup on David See Field.

Thursday Sept. 3

The women's soccer team commenced its regular season against the California University Vulcans and battled the team to an even 1-1 game.

The match was declared a draw with 8:19 left due to a lightning storm.

After the game was delayed roughly 30 minutes due to ongoing lightning, SU fell behind 1-0 late in the first half after the Vulcans scored a break away goal.

The Red Raiders responded quickly in the second half when junior Ashley Weaver recorded the game-tying goal.

The match ended when the three-hour maximum time limit was reaches. A portion of that limit was chewed up by the ongoing lightning.

In total, SU had six shots on goals to California's three. Sophomore Leah Roy played goalie in her Raider debut.

Saturday Sept. 5

After ending its first game with a draw, the Red Raiders (1-0-1) recorded the team’s first victory of 2015 a thrilling 3-2 victory over reigning PSAC champion, the East Stroudsburg Warriors.

SU struck early when sophomore Bailey Bzdak headed in a corner kick from junior Stephanie Allshouse just 43 seconds into the match.

East Stroudsburg responded with a pair of goals, and SU trailed until sophomore Jenny Litz tied the game 2-2 with a booming kick in the right side of the goal in the 85th minute.

SU claimed the victory when sophomore Kat Hartner tapped a loose ball past ESU goal keeper Jules Harris with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Raiders’ win snapped ESU’s nation-best 22-game unbeaten streak.
