Nathan Mao, a Shippensburg University English professor, died on the evening of Feb. 1 in the presence of family at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Mao, 73, was a tenured member of the faculty and worked at SU for more than four decades. He was born on Jan. 10, 1942 in China, where he was educated at the New Asia College in Hong Kong.

To further his education, Mao attended Yale University and received his Ph.D. in American literature from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1966.

His interests included translation of Chinese literature in English, political literature and American literature.

The late professor is responsible for translating many well-known works, including Fortress Besieged, Cold Nights and Twelve Towers.

“Family was always very important to Nathan and he loved his family very much,” the obituary states. Mao had two wives in his lifetime, five children and two grandchildren, all of which are still alive.

Mao’s funeral will be held in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. The Rev. Mark Medina and the Rev. William Harter from Falling Spring Presbyterian Church will oversee the service.

The family will see friends during the hour before the service at the funeral home. The burial will take place after the service and is closed to the public.
