As construction ends on Dauphin Drive, Shippensburg University looks to Lancaster Drive for its next closure.

Lancaster Drive is expected to close to thru traffic starting Thursday, Feb. 5, according to Facilities Management and Planning. The road is usually utilized by daily commuters on their way to the C-6, C-7 and C-10 parking lots.

Students and faculty driving into SU will need to take North Prince Street or Old Main Drive to access Adams Drive and make it to the parking lots behind the Luhrs Performing Arts Center.

The road on Adams Drive by Naugle Hall should be widened in the future to help with the traffic flow. An alternate route is also available via Earl Street, though the Adams Drive route is preferred by facilities. Drivers can take Earl Street to Old Main Drive, or continue on to York Drive, bypass the Kenneth O. Reed Operations Center, then continue on to Dauphin Drive.

Those who normally use the C-3 parking lot by the tennis courts and the C-4 lot by Kieffer and Lackhove Halls will still have access — only thru traffic will be stopped.

Facilities will have signage posted to direct drivers.

Bruce Herring and Eric Barr of Facilities Management and Planning hope the construction will be completed as quickly as possible. They expect heavy traffic to be a result of the Lancaster Drive closure. Facilities plans to work directly with faculty and staff to determine the best options for their parking situation. Facilities suggests that commuters leave home early this week to get to campus, in order to compensate for traffic delays. Pedestrians are not expected to see any new obstacles in their normal routes.

The construction is part of the installation of the new cooling system for SU, which is coming to its close.

“We’re seeing the light at the other end of the tunnel,” Herring said.

Those searching for up-to-date information on campus construction should check their ship.edu email and theslateonline.com, regularly.
