Chances are if you are driving near the Lancaster area during the fall season, you will see a billboard for a place called Field of Screams. Since 1993, Field of Screams has been terrorizing Pennsylvania residents with its annual attractions and haunted houses. However, have you ever wondered what makes those haunted houses work each and every year?

Reports of a possible gas leak prompted an evacuation of Dauphin Humanities Center (DHC) around 6:30 p.m. Monday night. Within the hour, it was confirmed that no gas leak occurred, but there was a malfunctioning vent that caused the odor.

"Buildings across the Shippensburg University campus were without water much of Saturday afternoon and evening after a water main break.
Maintenance crews continue to investigate the cause of the break, but the steadiest stream of water was seen flowing outside Naugle Hall near Etter Health Center at approximately 4:45 p.m., according to officials. "

Every October, one of the quintessential elements of the month is watching spooky movies. Whether you consider yourself a fan of being scared or not, something about watching films with a horror edge just feels right. However, streaming has made the selections plentiful, but narrowing down your watchlist a nightmare. As a self-proclaimed horror fanatic, I feel now is the time for me to aid my fellow students and make your October binges a lot easier:

To some outside observers, being a journalist seems like a cozy desk job. From how the media depicts the profession, one would assume all the work is done from the comfort of the newsroom, doing everything via email. However, journalists are some of the first ones out on the front line, and they face dangers not only from the stories they cover, but those who do not want them to publish those stories.

In the four years I have spent living on-campus, I will admit I never got to know the custodians who worked in each of my buildings.

Can a 30-year-old movie about dinosaurs still pull in a crowd in 2023? You bet “Jurassic” can.

2022 proved to not only be a great year for movies critically, but financially too, and it cemented that going to the movies is back in style. Studios are clearly capitalizing on this as the 2023 Summer Movie season is stacked to the brim with some massive blockbusters and highly-anticipated tentpole films.

It seems like every time you turn on the news, all you see is the world on fire. Politicians would rather fight amongst themselves than propose any kind of solutions to issues like gun violence, climate change, economic disparities, racism, etc. However, as a journalism major, I have noticed a very shocking trend among people.

So this week was an unusually big week for entertainment news. We had trailers for several new big releases like “Barbie,” “Blue Beetle” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse.” On the flip side of things we also got news that we would be getting remakes of all seven “Harry Potter” books as an HBO Max series and a live-action remake of “Moana” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising the role of Maui.

As a journalist, they teach you to be impartial. They teach you to not show biases and to report the news without showing a political stance. But with the recent events in Tennessee, I have to ask: When did children being murdered become a political issue? When did people being murdered in mass numbers on a near weekly basis become a political issue?

We often have those celebrities who everyone treats as the Hollywood darlings. The celebrities with no haters or the ones who always seem to appear over and over again as the safe bet for drawing in audiences. One of the mainstay celebrities for nearly a decade now has been Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. However, I feel the cracks in the nice guy facade are starting to show.

In honor of the 95th Academy Awards, I decided to check out some of the nominees that I had missed from the year prior. One I was excited to check out was “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” The film garnered an insane amount of critical praise, currently sitting at a 95% critic score and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While it didn’t win Best Animated Feature, it still was one of my favorite films of last year.

I recently took three hours out of my busy schedule to check out the re-release of “Titanic” in theaters. Ignore the fact I saw it by myself the day before Valentine’s Day — it is one of my favorite movies, so I put the loneliness aside. Even if you have never seen the film, chances are you are familiar with the iconic scene of Kate Winslet being drawn like “one of those French girls.” It has a surprising amount of nudity for a PG-13 film, and it got me wondering, why are we not seeing anything from Leo? This mundane observation grew into a much larger concern; why is full-frontal male nudity not more common in film?

Since the Broadway shutdown, my musical intake has been pretty subpar. The last show I saw on Broadway was “Beetlejuice” in February 2020. And the last show I saw on tour was in December 2021. So, of course, I was thrilled to see “Anastasia” was making it to Luhrs, and seeing it live truly reminded me why I love musical theatre.

The Luhrs Performing Art Center 2022-23 season has been hit after hit. On Thursday, Jan. 12, the hits kept coming when the beloved British-American rock band, America, took the stage to play some of their familiar favorites.

Just when we thought the Luhrs Performing Arts Center schedule could not get any better, the hit improv-based comedy show “Whose Line is it Anyways?” is heading to Shippensburg this spring.
