Life skills classes are essential for high school students in PA

(05/01/18 1:02am)

The Pennsylvania school system does not measure the success of a school on their student’s intellectual ability, but instead on whether or not their students are able to sit through and pass multiple mind-boggling and strenuous tests. If a school’s standardized test scores are high, then educators are praised for being effective.

Keep your guns but change our laws

(04/08/18 10:19pm)

On Feb. 14, 2018, the unthinkable happened — at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida — a mass shooting that has completely changed the conversation on gun violence. Nineteen-year-old Nikolas Cruz entered this public high school with an AR-15 rifle, taking the lives of 17 people and injuring another 17 innocent victims in the process (Stanwood and Burke). Teenage survivors of this shooting have taken to the media to share their thoughts on the gun laws in our nation, and I am amazed at their determination and strength. I believe that we need to implement stronger gun regulations that would make it harder for people who aren't qualified to own a gun to purchase one. Specifically, we need to create background checks that take more than a day to process, teach mandatory classes to every new gun owner on how to operate the weapon, and ban weapons that can kill 20 people in 20 seconds.

Student involvement is needed in more than just the general election

(03/27/18 1:19am)

One of Pennsylvania’s most important elections is taking place Nov. 6 — the gubernatorial election. Despite the fact that midterm elections are typically perceived as less important than the heavily televised presidential ones, the mid-term elections hold the most impact on the state’s. Because of the gridlock in Washington, D.C., more and more of law making is being accomplished at the state level. This means that whoever becomes governor in November will affect both Shippensburg University and the citizens of Pennsylvania immensely. Even with this knowledge, the voting in midterm elections is declining.

Mass shootings negatively affect students and their sanity

(03/20/18 1:57am)

We live in a world in which discussing uncomfortable topics forces citizens to accept the harsh reality of what is hurting the world. American citizens are being forced to understand that gun violence is reaching a new height — to the point that mass shootings killing children and young adults and teachers being armed with guns are becoming the hottest topics of discussion.

National walk out causes controversy

(03/20/18 1:47am)

Just four short years ago while finishing my senior year of high school, the thought of being involved in national politics not only never crossed my mind, but there were few high school seniors at Pottsgrove High in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, that would make such an admission.

Understanding gun culture differences should improve gun safety

(02/27/18 6:03pm)

Gun control has been a hot topic of discussion lately with the mass shootings leaving families, loved ones and friends angry, heartbroken and fed up. No one is talking about gun culture, so let’s talk about it. In America, the gun culture today reflects how divided this world is when it comes to its cultural differences. What society must understand is the difference in cultural gun use. For example, the use of guns is justified from the rural standpoint that guns are used for target practice and hunting.
