Dear Student,

Welcome to the 2017–18 academic year at Ship.  Whether you are a first-year student just beginning your Ship experience or a senior working toward graduation in May, I hope you are as excited about the upcoming year as I am to start my first year as Shippensburg University president.

One of the qualities that attracted me to Shippensburg University is that it is student centered. Our faculty members, staff, and administration are all here to serve you and help you fulfill your goals and dreams.

Your success begins in the classroom with academic programs designed and delivered by outstanding faculty. You will find many opportunities throughout the year to enrich your Ship experience.  This might be the year for you to work with your professor on a research project or to take an internship to delve into your chosen field.

You might choose to broaden your horizons by attending a lecture from a nationally-known speaker, taking a class or semester abroad, joining a student organization, or volunteering for a service project.

Ship offers so many ways to add to your experience, promote your growth, and strengthen your resume.

I would also encourage you to demonstrate the university’s core value of community by nurturing relationships characterized by trust, mutual respect, support, communication, cooperation, and acceptance.

The college experience is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is also an opportunity to grow as individuals prepared to live, work, and contribute as part of a diverse global society.

I hope you have set your expectations high for yourself, for me, and for the university.  I have great expectations for the year and look forward to getting to know you.  You can help me learn about the university by attending the regular open forums I will have throughout the year in the residence halls, CUB, or other locations on campus.  At these forums, you can ask me questions and share suggestions about how to make Ship an even better university.

I look forward to seeing you at student events and around campus and wish you the very best for this new academic year.

Sincerely,

Laurie A. Carter

President
