Shippensburg University has a new member to add to its Student Senate and his name is Lavell Simpkins. Simpkins is now one of the Multicultural Student Affairs senators for SU.

Simpkins was born on February 7, 1992, and he is ready to take this senate position by storm.

The 21-year-old Philadelphian already has a couple leadership roles under his belt and knows that he will be able to do a stellar job with this one. Simpkins is currently on his third year of being a resident advisor (RA) for SU and is currently an RA of Mowrey Hall.

During his time at SU, Simpkins has been the president of the Black Student Union, a member of orientation team and a founding father and former president of Ship Votes.

When Simpkins gets free time his hobbies include kicking back with his friends and reading. He finds reading very relaxing and enjoys every part of it, Simpkins said.

To the incoming freshmen, Simpkins advises that students “get involved, find out who you are.” Simpkins thinks that this advice is what helped him when he started college. He believes it is something that can really change your life.

Simpkins is currently in the process of finishing up his sociology major and his minors in public administration and political science. He is getting ready to graduate this upcoming spring and plans to mentor a freshman over these next few months so that he can pass on his wisdom to others and help people learn.

The saying that he likes to use for this process is “reach one, teach one.” Simpkins himself had two mentors from his hometown who taught him to actually think about what school is and is not teaching him.

One thing that Simpkins is going to take away from his time at SU is his spiritual journeys. During these journeys he was able to find himself and meet great people along the way, Simpkins said.
Simpkins hopes when he leaves SU that people will look back and say that they learned something from him.
