Embarrassingly enough, I refused to dive off the block until I was three summers deep into my local summer swim team. Do not get it twisted — I loved diving. From the side of the pool, I could have spent hours leaping into the water, feeling the rush around me as I torpedoed to the other side.

Finding a way to transform a performance into words is a skill the Slater of October, Abby Hockenberry, definitely has. Hockenberry is a sophomore communication, journalism and media major and joined The Slate last fall. Since joining, Hockenberry has written articles consistently and became an assistant Arts and Entertainment (A&E) editor.
Allyson Ritchey and Morgan Brumbaugh were crowned 2023 Shippensburg Homecoming Royalty on the field of Seth Grove Stadium Saturday.
The Slater of September is Hanna Atkinson for her abundance of contributions to the multimedia section. Atkinson is a first-year chemistry major with a concentration in forensics, and she joined The Slate staff in August as a staff photographer. Since joining, Atkinson has covered events every week, from rainy sporting events to cozy club meetings.
With the rise of more advanced technology, I think people are forgetting how much time it used to take for things to be created, and work is being devalued as a result. Not to sound older than I am, but time and skill can produce the same results as our modern tools, and sometimes the fastest result is not the best.
Self-described as “power-chord nostalgia,” Telecine is a four-man indie rock group from Boulder, Colorado. The members — Filip Casey, Owen Helfer, Andras Szalay and Ethan Patel — originally started making music together earlier this year after they realized each of them knew how to play the instruments that traditionally form a band — bass, guitar and drums.
It all started with a guitar for Lyle Kam. Music had always been a part of his life, and the old, classical guitar just existed in his home until he decided to give it a go. After learning the basics, Kam wanted to create his own music. “I thought ‘maybe I could try doing music, and posting it on YouTube,’” Kam said.

Reports of a possible gas leak prompted an evacuation of Dauphin Humanities Center (DHC) around 6:30 p.m. Monday night. Within the hour, it was confirmed that no gas leak occurred, but there was a malfunctioning vent that caused the odor.
