Game 1
The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey out-lasted Saint Michael’s on Saturday, battling to a 1-0 victory in the first match of the Dora Metrelis Classic from Jess Dow Field on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University.
Shippensburg (1-0) and Saint Michael’s (0-1) were scoreless until the 52:29 mark, when sophomore Cassie Rawa (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) deposited the game’s only goal. Rawa slammed home a rebound off a shot by senior Tori Ricker (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area).
The Raiders managed a 25-0 advantage in shots and 17-0 advantage in penalty corners but only found the back of the cage one time against the Purple Knights. SMC goalkeeper Sarah Healey made 11 saves, while defenders Shannon Rice and Hannah Beardsley were each credited with two defensive saves.
Freshman goalkeeper Ally Mooney (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) finished with a shutout in her first collegiate contest. She did not face a shot.
SU will take the field against tournament host Southern Connecticut State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Game 2
The Shippensburg University field hockey team defeated Southern Connecticut State on Sunday morning, 6-0, in its final game of the Dora Metrelis Classic from Jess Dow Field.
The Raiders (2-0) did not allow an opposing shot attempt for the second straight game as they out-shot Southern Connecticut 38-0 and held a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners. SU now has a 63-0 advantage in shots through its first two games of the 2014 season.
For the Owls (1-1), goalkeeper Audrey Dolloff made 23 saves.
Senior Tori Ricker (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) scored three times, marking her first career hat trick, and contributed an assist, while freshmen Emily Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and Madison Scarr (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) each added one goal and one assist.
Freshman Lizzie Frombach (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) contributed a goal, and seniors Lucy Kauffman (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) and Ari Saytar (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) had one assist.
SU hosts No. 1 Millersville on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in its home opener from Robb Sports Complex.
