The Shippensburg Lady Raiders were up for a battle when they played West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday, Oct. 30. West Virginia was ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic region.
Shippensburg came out on top, managing to score three goals on WVW, a team that had only allowed four goals all season.
For the Raiders, junior Gayle Kuntzmann netted two goals, while sophomore Alison Dowdrick scored one. The first goal of the game came nine minutes in, when Dowdrick showed no mercy as she crashed through the 18-yard box, managing to send the ball past Caroline Lalley, the WVW keeper.
It was Dowdrick’s fifth goal of the season. Less than six minutes later, Kuntzmann added to the score when she sent a left-footed rocket past Lalley. Kuntzmann struck again nine minutes later with a shot that was an exact replica of her first. Kuntzmann’s two goals give her a total of 14 for the season.
The two goals tied her for second in school history for goals in a career, totaling 35. Senior keeper Beth Long made nine saves in the game. The Lady Raiders traveled to West Chester Saturday to compete in the last match of the season.
Just 89 seconds in the game, the Raiders were awarded a corner kick. Sophomore Amanda Greenawalt placed the ball into the lower left-hand corner giving the Raiders an early lead. This gave Greenawalt seven goals for the season, and 13 for her career with Shippensburg. West Chester managed to come back and score two goals, giving them a 2-1 advantage to end the first half.
West Chester was able to net another goal 10 minutes into the second half, giving them a two goal lead. Shippensburg fought hard for a corner, and with 26 minutes left on the clock, defender Cassie Armold connected for her first colligate goal off a corner.
Beth Long added four more saves, concluding the season with 107 saves. Long has 375 saves in three full seasons with the Raiders. Senior Kellye Von Stetten also concluded her career Saturday. Von Stetten played in 76 games since she started with the Raiders in 2005. Von Stetten was one of the most experienced players on the team, having scored five goals and adding 11 points for her career. She was a 2008 co-captain, and started in 55 of the teams 59 games since 2006.
The Raiders were bumped out of postseason competition after tying Millersville last week.
